trouble shooting help needed on 833

I am having the trouble with my 833, I have been having a problem with the car not reving up much above an idle.
I had thought it was a carburetor problem, but after rebuilding two carbs and checking the fuel pressure from the pumps I still have the same issue. the car idles perfectly and will rev up a little, but as you push it, it seems that its not getting enough gas.
I am now wondering if it could be a timing problem or distributor etc.
any help resolving this would be extremely helpful.
Thanks
Barry

A possibly useful diagnostic would be to know the manifold vacuum at idle.

Fuel supply and carburetion would still be my primary suspects but have you checked to see if your distributor centrifugal advance is functioning? And of course you should check the timing.

the vacuum on the intake is a consistent -25, which i assume is good.
The distributor seems fine, but I do have a replacement that I plan to try this evening.
The fuel inlet pressure is between 2 and 2.5.
We did play with the timing last night and I could see no change.

Thanks for the added info, but something questionable on the manifold vacuum, typical value for an engine in good condition at idle is a steady 18-20.

Ill recheck that, but I do recall it being around 24-25, it would seem that it being that high would mean that the engine is tighter than normal.

I've not heard of even a fresh, tight engine giving more than 21 inches of vacuum at idle. I suspect either your gauge is incorrect, or there is some sort of clue in that reading that I can't interpret but needs to be understood.

You are running a Detroit Lubricator, right?

Partial flow restriction in the exhaust system. This can be caused by partial collapse inside muffler or the heat riser valve froze in the closed position.

Just wanted to let you guys know we have found out that evidently the car has jumped time at some point and thus it would idle beautifully but would die when you tried to gun it.
the way we found it was I put a 1932 distributor on the car which allowed me to turn it further left and right and EUREKA, it reved up and seemed to run fine.
Now I need some input about getting it back in time, seems its probably slipped one or two chain links.
Hope this will benefit others who may have the same issues!
thanks
Barry
