Here's a picture of removal lifting.The location of the brackets were changed for the install to avoid the potential to disrupt the clamp load / seal of the head gasket when removing the brackets from the head bolts.

More work done on the Packard the last week or so. Unfortunately I suck at taking pictures as we go. The trans is out of the frame (left the engine if for now). The front suspension as been completely disassembled and is waiting to be cleaned up and painted.

The rear axles have been removed. It looks like the bearings are in great shape. They will just need to be cleaned and repacked. The oil seals on both sides are shot and will need replacing.

For the Ultramatic, my plan is to pull the pan and look around inside. When the fluid was drained it actually looked really good so I am hoping for good news in that area. As the car only has 129K miles I am hoping that the trans is ok. My biggest concern is that it has been sitting since 1965 so I am afraid the seals my have gone hard.

As a question to the forum and those with way more experience with Packards than I. What should I look for after opening up the trans? Also, should I open up the torque converter/clutch assembly?

Nice to hear of your progress.

Just a note on your comment of "....ONLY 129k miles....". In that era, reaching 100k miles with just a valve grind or two and without other major engine work was an uncommon event worthy of celebration. Ditto for automatic transmissions. So the chances are good that even if they had exceptionally good care throughout their lives, both your engine and trans are beyond their typical factory-delivery service lives and more than likely have had major service, it will be interesting to see what you find as you open them up.

Thank you for your thoughts. I do understand stand the mileage then vs now. It still bothers me to drive a modern car over 100K. All psychological from days gone by...

I have had the head off and the cylinders looked OK. Some scoring on the walls but, other than that not too bad. The plan was to do a rebuild on the engine.

We will look at the trans and see it looks like in side.

Could someone please school me on how to remove the brake pedal assembly from the frame? I have looked in the service manuals and have not been able to find drawings or instructions. I would like to get it out so it can be cleaned and that area of the frame painted.
