This threat invites you for a short stroll through Paris. Let's jump into the free and automatic driven -> CDGVAL, that connects the A?roport de Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle with the departure station of the ->Metro.

The Metro (short for M?tropolitain) drives pneumatic-tired, which notably reduces the noice level.
I'm willing to admit, that Packard didn't invent the wheel (this was a Russian), but a pneumatic-tired -> Packard train had been on a rail decades ago.

Taxi to perdition

There are wonderful car museums in France but none of them in the capital Paris. Therefore I looked around for alternative sources to feed my hobbyhorse. The Mus?e de l'Arm?e came into my mind. What a Napoleonic location!

One of the exhibits is a Renault Typ AG. In 1914 in the greatest peril, when the Germans troops (motor) marched on Paris the French supreme command ordered 1,500 taxis, the large majority of them Renault Typ AG, to get the soldiers to the approaching front.

Operation Market Garden

Once I found in a -> Russian museum a Willys and a foldable micro-motorbike, built for British Special Forces.

On display in Paris is the same duo and I learned that this kind of motorbike had its premiere in the British Armed Forces on stage of -> operation Market Garden in September 1944. Its small -> Villiers engine is a two-stroke stench bomb.
The below shown Willys served as set of wheels for -> Marshal Lattre de Tassigny.

...where the horses would normally have been

A second source to see some old cars is the -> Mus?e des arts et m?tiers (Technical Museum). It is rich in exhibits, which are displayed in glas boxes, ranged left and right with a rail in between to move heavy objects, weighing (several) tons.

Click to see original Image in a new window

The steam driven -> Cugnot car (see below) heralded a new age.
"...In 1770, a full-size version of the fardier ? vapeur was built, specified to be able to carry four tons and cover two lieues (7.8 km or 4.8 miles) in one hour, a performance it never achieved in practice. The vehicle weighed about 2.5 tonnes tare, and had two wheels at the rear and one in the front where the horses would normally have been. The front wheel supported a steam boiler and driving mechanism. The power unit was articulated to the "trailer", and was steered from there by means of a double handle arrangement. One source states that it seated four passengers and moved at a speed of 2.25 miles per hour (3.6 km/h).
Engine part of Cugnot's 1770 fardier ? vapeur, as preserved at the Mus?e des Arts et M?tiers, Paris
The vehicle was reported to have been very unstable..."

Gerd,
for providing us with the Cugnot "Car", a hugely significant milestone in automotive history. Didn't know of it's survival.

Randy, the pleasure is all mine.

First gasoline fumes

The pioneering days were filled with milestones. Below shown is one of the first gasoline-driven cars. Wire wheels, rubber tires, a chain with guard, ... , after several thousand years of oxcarts and horse-drawn vehicles a new era in the history of transportation commenced.

The museum annotates:

"Peugeot Quadri-Cycle 1893
The gasoline-powered automobil, which first appeared in Germany in 1886 rivalled the steam-powered automobil from 1896 thanks to the promotional efforts made by its makers, and notably Panhard-Levassor und Peugeot. It showed its technical superiority from the very first automobile races in 1894 - 1895. "

Any list of transportation pioneers would be incomplete without Tin Lizzy. Her acetylene eyes reveal that the below shown model was built before 1916. The lamp gas came into being in an acetylene generator, located on the left running board.
