Crankshafts are not interchangeable!

It's been mentioned here before, but one more time, the 320", 352" and 374" crankshafts should not be interchanged without rebalancing the entire assembly.

The piston weights of the three engine displacements are so different, severe vibration can result if the correct crankshaft is not used.

I was recently called to consult on a rebuilt engine which vibrated too much. When I questioned what parts had been used, the original 374" crankshaft was scored, so the customer furnished another, better condition crankshaft from his parts stash. He had no records or recollection where he got this crankshaft or for which displacement.

Since the customer furnished the crank and chose not to pay for a balance, the builder/installer said, "The vibration problem is not of my making. We'll start over, you're paying for another R&R, disassembly, balancing, gaskets, reassembly."
