Knob? A picture or more complete description would be helpful.

Depends on the vintage but it could be a grease cup (later years used oilers).

If so, unscrew it, fill with cup grease, and screw it back on enough to force some grease into the distributor shaft bushing(s). Turn in a bit every few thousand miles to maintain lubrication.

Good Morning...That little fellow is for greasing the bearings. Depending on how long it has been since it was filled, it might be full of old hard grease and will need to be removed and cleaned out. Then put it back with fresh grease in it and just give it a bit of a turn to put fresh grease on the distributor bearings a couple of times a year. Sort of a nice old fashioned bit of maintenance...Have a great Packard day. Ernie in Arizona
