Difficult but possible. Mark the pointer and the 7 degree line with some white paint ahead of time. It is often easier to turn the engine over and find the mark to paint it on the damper from under the car.

Disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor also when setting your idle timing. Idle speed should also be pretty low 500 or so also for most acurate setting.
