I used to know this but have forgotten - are the outer rear axel bearings lubricated by the differential oil or do they get packed with grease similar to front bearings? Iím sure Iíll know the answer as soon as I start taking it apart but some advance knowledge certainly wonít hurt either! In case it matters, this is on a 1954 Henney-Packard.

Typically if the rear axle bearing(s) are encased by both an inner and outer seal (for example, prewar senior Angleset rear axles), the bearings are packed with grease. If there is only an outer seal, the bearing is lubricated by the differential gear oil.

I thought that was the case and the parts book seems to confirm it by showing an inside seal. Since itís a 5413, I didnít think it would have its own view or I would have looked before asking!
