Hi All,

I have a 1950 23rd series with an ultramatic (no overdrive) and the tailshaft seal is leaking like crazy.

Is it possible to remove the rear bearing retainer ( tail shaft)to replace the rear bearing and seal without removing the transmission?

thanks!

Yes, you don't have to pull the trans. The tail shaft housing unbolts like a normal trans. However, if it is really pouring out it may not be the seal, but the speedometer gear being installed backwards. To check, tape some paper towel over the vent on top of the trans and drive the car. If it gets soaked, the gear is installed backwards.

As I recall, the rear mount is on the tailshaft so if you remove it to change the seal you will need to have something like a floor jack or similar under the rear of engine or transmission pan for support while the tailshaft is removed. If you go under the pan be sure to use a wide block of wood to distribute the load.
