Starter soleniod arced

I was driving the other day and my amp meter I noticed jumped to +30amps everything else was ok and then about 1 mile down the road the amp meter slowly fell back to normal level of just slightly positive, when I turned off the car it would not start again with the starter button doing nothing. I looked under the hood and the starter seleniod had arced and burned the ground strap to the starter as seen in the pictures. Has anyone seen this? The battery was disconnected and I checked the voltage at 6.4volts. do people think this was a generator issue, voltage regulator issue, or a short in the starter soleniod? I have another starter soleniod I was going to put on and see what happens. Do people think the starter itself is ok?
1937 Packard 115

Thanks

James

It looks like there may have been an internal short circuit in the solenoid between the grounded housing and the battery terminal.
If that is the case, then the starter should still be OK.

Looks like the battery cable metal connection touched the starter soleniod causing the arc. Thankfully I put another soleniod on and the car starter again.

I hope you reversed the cable's terminal so the bend is upward to provide more clearance between it and the solenoid case.

Maybe also see if you can turn it 90 degrees.
Now you got me thinking maybe I better look at my cable and make sure this won't happen to me.
Thanks for posting!
