Hi

Paraphrasing the old cigarette ad slogan:
"The New 'Packard' that dares to be known by bad taste alone"
Thanks Mr. PB for the leVey quote! Never heard that before, but how true!

Bayliff's have a nice restaurant in Lima, OH, called the Packard Grille. Maybe they should stick to grilling steaks!

Chicago Auto Show - 1983

"Yes, that appears to be a Packard sign at the rear of this display space, borrowed from the marque that had expired after 1958. This is a neo-classic rendition that borrowed the Packard name. Both a maroon Sport coupe and a white "Caribbean" convertible are in the foreground, with a third example toward the rear. Starting at a hefty $59,995, these cars were produced by the Bayliff Coach Corp. in Lima,Ohio. Buick Riviera and Cadillac Fleetwood mechanical components were employed."

C. Budd Bayliff has been in the restaurant business for a LONG time, off and on.

The Packard Grille must have opened since I last lived in the Lima area, about 20 years ago.

He was a customer at my dad's Schwinn bicycle dealership in Lima, in the early 70's. Back then, he owned a Frontier steak house.

I think for a time, he owned 1-2 GM dealerships in Van Wert, OH.

I've never seen the point of the fake Packards, myself.

Maybe an attempt to simulate a Darrin "dip" that didn't turn out quite right?

Before Fisker introduced the Karma sport sedan recently, he modified high end cars in the front, rear and interior. Nothing structural, just outer panels. BMW 6-Series coupe and M-B SL were the donor cars. He did about as professional and thorough a design job as could be done to an existing modern car and still, the results were so so. To be credible, a new Packard would require one heck of an overhaul to an existing high end car. And that's the easy part. The hard part would be deciding which car to base it on and what design to go with. Design is fun but tricky business. A new Packard couldn't simply graft on pieces of 70 year old Packards. A new design would need to be developed from scratch using only basic Packard DNA like the ox yoke, etc.
