Visit to J&R Museum in Bernalillo, New Mexico

Hello All,

I was recently in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque areas. Purpose of the trip was to visit with family and friends and to do some research on my father's Packard business and residence locations in the 1920s and 30s.

While there I visited the J&R Museum with my son and his family. The museum is located in Bernalillo. Bernalillo is a small town outside of Albuquerque and adjoins Rio Rancho. The museum founders have been participants in many of the Great Races. The drive their cars.

Included in the collection are six Packards (a '29, a '30, a '31, and three 32s). I think the Light Eight Coupe Sedan is the most attractive of the Packards. I believe the owners may have taken some liberties with the body colors, but will wait for experts here to comment.

I bought a full set of eight Highway 66 signs at the museum store. The clerks there said that they and never sold the full set before. They are all now mounted on my garage wall.

All in all it is a nice little museum and worth the time to visit if you are in the Albuquerque area.

Here are photos of the cars and their windshield information labels.

Thanks for the tour! The 32 "coupe sedan" is certainly the rarest of the body styles for that series, seldom seen.

Packard allowed its customers to "take liberties" with color choices. It was an extra-cost option (before the war, anyway). Present owners seem to take that as meaning they can restore their cars to any color they want as well. While I'm a fan of "custom colors," some people should consult color experts before moving forward with their paint plans.

There are major errors in every one of those placards.

West, et al:

I am aware that the labels are not accurate, but they are their words. Often when visiting museums, all across the country, I note errors in the information labels. These are probably the worst I have seen. Taking liberties with colors is one thing, but the information conveyed to the public should be accurate. One thing though, the do drive them.
