Trying to separate carburetor halves held together by metal hanger.

I'm currently in the process of attempting to revive a (I believe) 1956 Packard Patrician.

I have the carburetor mostly disassembled, and I'm to the part where the top should lift off the bottom, revealing the float chambers and floats dangling from the top, but while loose, the halves are held together by a little "hanger" thing, which had some sort of needle valves hanging on it. I pried carefully at the offending bit, and it stubbornly refused to yield.

How can I take out the metal hanger bit and remove the top half of the carburetor from the bottom half?

There is a little piston on the end of that piece and it is stuck in its bore. Shoot carb cleaner down the slot and then tap the piston down to break it loose. The pry it back up. Good luck.

A 1956 Patrician with the stock original carburetor would have had a Rochester, not a Carter. Carters were on Clippers.

It looks like your carb may have been on Neptune's Packard Chariot of choice. Before you spend to much time on trying to clean it up for rebuilding you may want to inspect the areas where gaskets go in ensure they aren't pitted to bad and will seal.

Anyways, good luck with your project with a little LOL to see you through your task at hand.

The detailed diagram and explanation were much appreciate, and exactly described the scenario. I managed with thorough use of carb cleaner and silicon spray lubricant to un-stick the piston and remove the top half of the carb.

As mentioned, decide if the goal is a runner or a correct restoration.

I may have a relatively good condition Rochester core carburetor available.
