Packard Darrin accident?

A good friend who I grew up with in Michigan was on his way home this past weekend from a car show. Somewhere along the way he noticed what looked to him like a Packard Darrin ahead of him.

Unfortunately something went horribly wrong and apparently the left front wheel was somehow detached and front fender badly damaged.

Anyone hear or see anything about this in Michigan on a highway or street over the weekend? Was it really a Darrin?
