I recently purchased a 1937 115C Touring Sedan. The exhaust manifold had alot of surface rust so I decided to remove it for refinishing. Fortunately, removing the manifold was uneventful

However, the heat riser was frozen in place and I had to finesse it out. I spoke to Kanter and was able to purchase a rebuild kit which included bushings the pin and screw and a new spring. My "flapper" seems to be reuseable. The gentleman at Kanter's told me I also needed to put a weight on the apparatus which they do not have. So, I have a few questions:

1. Where does the weight go?
2. Where does the weight attach?
3. What does it look like - can anyone upload a photo?
4. Does anyone know where I could get a weight?

Hi Bob and welcome,
If you go into the searh box area and type in heat riser valve it will show you one off a 1934 which is not a lot different to your 37 if at all. The side with the spring on is the bob weight.

The bob-weight is on the rear side of the manifold and rotates counter-clockwise by gravity. The thermostat windup is 1/2 to 3/4 turns which should be covered in the instructions.

Also, if there is carbon buildup in the intake manifold chamber the unit will not serve much purpose because there will be no flow. So you need to make sure the intake side is clear of rust and carbon. I use a length of bailing wire fed around the chamber as a scrubber. If your manifold is still together then it may need to be soaked in a decarbonizer. To service the unit on the car, a light tapping with a brass hammer will also dislodge carbon and rust with the motor running.
