Clipper is now formally registered as a separate make for 1956. As such, Packard script plate is eliminated, but later reinstated in production and offered to previous owners as a retrofit. As with 55th Series, Custom is the top of the three-tiered line-up, with the most obvious step-up from Super being interior trim. Constellation designation, however, is dropped. Headlamp bezels are restyled, increasing the appearance of overall length; turn signals relocated from grille to front fender. Front bumper guards are moved outboard; air opening in lower valence is enlarged and also includes a mesh panel. Side trim is restyled to provide a side stripe on two-tone models. Rear fender skirts are optional, but rocker panel moldings are standard. Trunk lid is squared off; rear bumper is a completely new design, integrated with new shark-fin taillights, which would remain popular with customizers for decades to come. Torsion-Level suspension is still an option, but with 100% installation in actual production; it officially becomes standard equipment in May of 1956. |
