Photo taken by this writer at the North Jersey Auto Show, May 15, 2011. Not a great color choice for a formal body style, but to each his own.

Here's a pair of photos detailing some of the engine details of John Hovey's 1901 Model C, taken while the car was on display at the CWJ Museum in Bernardsville, New Jersey a few years ago.

Some further pictures of a Model C engine. On the side image you can see the large counterweights of the crankshaft, and also the governor for the centrifugal spark advance (patent 667,792 of 2/12/1901). The crankcase is an "open" case; rings are oiled by an oiler on top of the cylinder and the excess oil that is below the rings just blows out the back (facing forward), making a tidy little mess to clean up after driving. This particular car did the London-Brighton run and I can only guess at what the cleanup was like. I'm guessing the rpm range of this motor was probably from about 60 (idle) to perhaps 800 max. Not too different in multiple than today's engines.

One of the rarest of early Packards is the 1902 Model G with a 2 cylinder opposed engine of 24 hp. Only 4 are believe to have been built and one remains in a private collection. The one pictured was purchased by J.D. Rockefeller's younger brother William.

Photo from the Terry Martin Collection and recently distributed by the Eastern Packard Club.

Model 900-553 with optional steel disc wheels. A mostly original car just back from a tour.
