The usual method of finishing a crankshaft bearing is to use a hand lap while the shaft is rotating in a lathe. In the Packard factory the idea illustrated in this picture was originated to hone to size and to correct out-of-roundness and taper on Packard crankshafts - again to insure and assure your customer's investment. Packard has about $60,000 invested in a sufficient quantity of these machines to keep up with present-day production. Time saved by machine over old hand method approximately 40 minutes per unit.
