8x10 black and white photograph from glass negative of chassis of 1899 Packard Number One. Inscribed on photo back; completed Nov. 6, 1899, Warren Ohio; Model A, 1-cylinder, 9-horsepower, 71.5-inch wheelbase, 2-person roadster. Note that the H-gate shift box is in place, having been installed after initial tests of Nov. 1899 (initially there were 2 levers). The late Jack Harlin's "#50" 1955 Clipper Panama Stock Car. In Jack's words: "I ran this in some NASCAR races, minus the Ford floater rear end. Installed front coil springs from Henny ambulance, double shocked R.F., plated stock wheels & cut out rear 1/4s for tire changes. We then set it up for local dirt tracking, hence the floater rear that was allowed. Towed it with a 55 400 HT. I metal flaked the red & blue. Class huh? My partner & I had a body shop so was no big deal." |
