The closest to original installation would be to install a 1939 transmission/overdrive. The wiring for a 1940 would be much more complex compared to the 39.
The adaptation of your transmission top to the 39 type gearbox is well documented.
Of course I say this with some prejudice because I can supply a nice used 39 setup... (or a 40-later...)
