It's extremely highly unlikely that the connecting rods need freeing up. Far more often it's the iron piston rings rusted to the iron cylinder walls. Your favorite snake oil down the spark plug holes, lots of waiting, a little nudging with the starter or a hand crank - and patience above all usually does the trick. But before you put the car is service it's still highly recommended to drop the oil pan and clean it, perhaps inspect bearings, clean the oil pump intake, etc.
