A good starting point, I kind of like it. Might I suggest you give it a try with wooden running boards such as sometimes seen on Minerva's and some custom Duesy's? And how about natural finish wood spoke wheels?

Re the wooden running boards- have you seen them? Some used rubber rub-strips in a metal retainer strip on top or partly recessed into the wood base for more sure footing, others had open segments (to let the water drain) which had a metal latticework in them. I'll fish around for some photos I might have.

And here's far better pictures of the 34 Pierce by Cantrell which might give you some ideas for decorative wood detail and tailgate style.
