Temp Guage

Another "advice" question. Last season my temperature guage ran just above the center mark on my 1940 120. This year it rides between cold and the center mark. I do know that the car is running at about 180 degrees, maybe a little higher. Is there a way to test the unit or should I just assume that it needs to be rebuilt or replaced? If this is the case, what is the best way to go? Any advice as to where I should seek service will also be appreciated. Thank you.
