Mark Moody was obviously a pretty smart guy who no doubt got out of China before second battle of Shanghai in August to October of 1937. (He probably stuck it out after the fist Shanghai War in 1932 between the Japanese and Chinese).

He would have known about the Japanese onslaught occurring that year. Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek pivoted from fighting the Communists to attacking the Japanese, with disastrous consequences. Shanghai was devastated by ferocious urban warfare, with the loss of about 300,000 lives.

Mr. Moody, had he stayed in Shanghai, would have had virtually no clientele left to buy his cars.

This situation would persist throughout World War II, followed by the fighting between the Nationalists and Communists in the aftermath.
