The ammeter is a very simple gauge. It is merely a coil with a magnetized needle sticking thru the center. When the electricity is flowing in one direction (charge) through the coil it generates a magnetic field which pushes the needle to the right. When electricity flows in the opposite direction (discharge) it pushes the needle to the left.

I once owned a 1928 526 and rebuilt the ammeter myself in about an hour. Not really a difficult task.
