To drive the way we do today, yes you'd either want a high speed ring and pinion, or overdrive, if for nothing else than to give longer engine life. These heavy monsters had quite high (numerically) rear axles. The majority of our roads were still unpaved and those where you could average even 50 or 55 mph were few and the cars were geared accordingly.
