The heat shield mounts around the fuel pump, not the carburetor. It's mounting should be well illustrated in the service literature but just from memory the upper fastener (right in your photo) goes under the forward manifold stud and nut, the lower one to the rearward pump mounting bolt. IIRC only the senior engine (356) also used a carburetor heat shield.

The battery cable to the starter motor should be the positive cable, not the negative. I can't help with the routing of it but I'm sure someone else will provide that.
