If long and skinny, there are some aftermarket radiator overflow tanks made that fit that description. If that is the purpose there should be some kind of tubing going over and connecting to the radiator overflow tube.

Aftermarket kits for additional upper valve lubrication were also a popular fad back in the day. If there is evidence of a small diameter copper tubing connecting the tank to a plate or fitting at the bottom of the carb or near the carb on the intake manifold the tank could be the reservoir for that oil. I believe the upper valve lubrication was one of the main reasons for products like Marvel Mystery oil coming along.

Most of the original valve lube reservoirs of the period were glass jars or sturdy fairly small diameter painted metal tanks but one or two kits are still made and sold today and could come in chrome.
