The assembly is non-ferrous and I have taken a number apart and always with needle nose pliers. There may be a small amount of white aluminum oxide present but it has never caused any seizing of the fasteners in their threaded holes. You do not want to over tighten anything anyway as the cast parts are on the fragile side.
Brake fluid is my lubricant of choice along with careful removal of the gaskets to use as a pattern so new ones can be cut from the same thickness of gasket paper which is available at most part stores.
