A stuck clutch will not release. With the engine running and a stuck clutch, you won't be able to put the car in gear.
It sounds like your car has a badly slipping clutch.

I assume the clutch linkage is free and operating correctly and that the transmission is intact.

Have you tried moving the car in second or high gear? Low gear may be stripped, or the low/reverse shifting fork may be loose on its shaft.
