Been in garage tonight. to check valve timing
Manual says to set # 1 exhaust tappet to .017 at TDC
then insert a .004 feeler. and slowly turn eng.in normal rotation until feeler is gripped..(no prob there). then slowly until the feeler is just release.

Per Manual:

If valve timing is correct, the flywheel pointer should now align with a point on the flywheel midway between "1UPDC" and the 10 degree "after" mark

A variation in alignement of 3 graduations either way from this midpoint is permissable. (that would be 5 degrees after. Or in other words anywhere between "1UPDC" and the 10 degree aftermark)

Mine was 2 degrees after "1UPDC" or 2 graduations from the midpoint. which according to the book is permissable.

Phewww !!! didnt really feel like taking the front end apart to get to the timing chain...

Some how i think we are narrowing it down to Fuel, Carb, or timing on distributor like many of you suggest.

In addtion, tommarrow im gonna check the valve clearances on that # 3 piston which was showing 30 psi
