Depending on where you've put your battery cut-off switch, the leads for the tender don't have to be on the battery. They can be under the hood on a good ground and on the lead hot cable where it emerges under the hood. Personally I don't use a battery tender, I just put on a trickle charger overnight once or twice during the winter. I've been getting about 6-7 years of service from the large NAPA #7210 commercial truck/bus batteries.
