Properly fixed, reliability shouldn't be an issue, as I said before I've not touched by O-D regulator in 48 years of driving and that mirrors the experience of most others with the O-D system. Note made about the 9th series unit.

I'll ask around about what others have done - don't get exasperated!

No thanks to the granny accomodations, but if you want to ship the car to me for a few years for me to sort it out, that'd be a welcomed offer. In the meantime, get a battery charger if you don't have one, charge it up, and enjoy driving - just keep to less than 150 miles at a time or so, without headlamps.

PS - just in case you run into some O-D cutout/voltage controls, the O-D number is stamped on the base. Numbers which will work on your car and their original applications are:

#20530 - 826/833/840/845
900/901/902/903/904

#21262 - 1001/1002/1003/1004
1100/1101/1102/1103/1104/1105
1200/1201/1202/1203/1204/1205

Until about 18 months ago NAPA sold a replacement for either of these O-D numbers. They were selling for about $38 and were NAPA/Echlin #VR-755 should you come across one. When word got out that NAPA was discontinuing them, they sold out like hotcakes and I'd bet MANY owners of these vintage cars bought as many as they could get their hands on. You might try advertising for one.
