Even with electric signals I find myself using these hand signals when someone is following too closely and the system is not nearly as visible as new cars:

Extend the arm for the slow signal and wave the hand to get the followers attention.

Upon observing that attention has been achieved raise the arm for the desired signal.

I suppose a brightly colored glove would also help.

This method seems to work well for me, although if I was wiring my own car I would bite the bullet and install trailer beacons. They may look like hell, but with the right plugs they could be removed for shows.
