I'll have a look for a good compressible material. As you say, Dave, mating of the surfaces is key especially as all 8 contact points are on the same, fixed plane. If the outlets were separate, like on a mordern sports exhaust manifold, there would be a bit of "give" in the unit and each gasket can be compressed separately. On the straight 8, if there is a gap on one branch it is difficult to overcome as it is rigidly connected to the others.

Well at least that makes sense to me!!!!
