A fuel pump, and especially a single-action pump, is the simplier to do and basically just consists of a careful disassembly, evaluation of the castings and parts, and replacing the diaphragm and the valves. There are no adjustments to make as there are in a carburetor; you might take a look at Big Kev's excellent "show and tell" in the Literature and Manuals section.

With a carburetor it's more than just cleaning and changing gaskets, an understanding of the various ciruits is important, and there are a number of adjustments that should be made and it's not usually a good assumption that they were correct to begin with - too many unknowing "tinkerers" oould have had a go at it in the past. If you give it a try and the results are not satisfactory, all you are out in addition to your time is the cost of the kit so in that case you could then send it to a good rebuilder or buy an exchange rebuilt unit from Max or Kanter.
