Re: Vavlve grinding tools

I've used this Sioux/Black & Decker valve grinding set on dozens and dozens of Packard valve jobs - you might be fortunate and find one at a larger flea market where I've seen them on occasion. One local auto repair show here also has a similar set so you might check local shops. Also shops that serviced inboard marine engines years back - that's where my kit came from. But rather than buy, surely some hobbyist (not necessarily Packard folk) in your area must have one and will help you with it.

If the seat damage is slight, you can grind it down and then with two different angle stones, one greater and one lesser than the seat angle, narrow the seat back to a correct seat width and position on the valve face - the so called (but incorrectly called) 3-angle seat - done it many times. Of course the seat will be lower in the block and may require grinding the end of the stem if you run out of adjustment on the mechanical lifter. If the damage is more severe you'll may have to remove the block to a machine shop and have a valve seat insert installed. I say "may have to" because there were special tools, Chrysler had them, perhaps others) that allowed you to cut a recess in the block for an insert without removing the engine. I've looked for one to adapt to Packard's guides but never managed to come across one, though I still check flea markets for one.

If I can help further, send a PM. Saratoga Springs NY isn't that close to me, but it's not that far either. If you can, how about a good closeup photo of the seat damage?
