Early models had stamped rocker arms, later had forged - they can be interchanged (see the Service Letters).

The smaller 8 (320 ci, 3-3/16 bore) was introduced with the 6th Series. The 1st and 2nd Series 8 was a 3-3/8 x 5 engine (357 ci); it became the 385 cubic inch 3-1/2 x 5 the following year; crankshaft and timing order also changed at the same time. In addition to the obvious difference in the bore the 1st and 2nd Series 8s can be distinguished as they have the timing order 1-3-2-5-8-6-7-4 cast into the block on the passenger side. Beginning with the 3rd Series it became the more or less industry standard 1-6-2-5-8-3-7-4.
