Glad to hear you found and solved the problem. As happens so often, identifying problems with our older cars ends up as identifying and then correcting ill-advised or faulty "repairs" by prior owners.

As to the clutch chatter, it could be worn or loose motor and/or transmission mounts but clutch release fingers out of adjustment would be my first suspect.
