The more I learn the more I think a fuse should go between the braided copper lead and the other one, which is probably the field wire pigtail. Acc'd to available internet info, that is where they place a fuse on Model T generators for "safety upgrades." A 5 amp fuse is recommended for a generator putting out 100 watts, which at 6 volts is a charging rate of less than 14 amps.

There just happens to be a rebuilt CG 697 on Ebay. The parts view shows something underneath the third brush spring on the back of the brush holder plate, but it's hard to tell what it is. Mine doesn't have it regardless.

I am guessing that, for lack of a proper fuse holder, someone grounded out the field circuit to protect the generator while the car was being test run.
