No fast rule of thumb on coils, they can fail in as few as a few months as we saw with the recent Audi and VW recalls, or they can still perform normally after 75 or more years. But generally the symptoms of coil degradation are as follows: quick starts and normal performance when the coil is cold or cool, and ignition misfiring when hot, along with difficult hot starts. And it then progresses so that less and less heat is needed to make the coil misfire until it finally just dies. Simply being sluggish (but with all cylinders firing normally - i.e. no ignition "missing") is not a typical symptom of coil failure. That's more a symptom of just needing a comprehensive tune-up.
