1938 oil filter

I recently purchased a 1938 1601-D and I'm in the process of changing the oil. The oil filter is located under the generator and near impossible to get at without removing the generator. I've noticed that other models have the filter above the generator making it much more accessible. There are two threaded holes in the head that would accommodate the bracket for the filter. Is the filter normally moved to this position and is there a modern replacement? At present there is an AC Type P-21S in use and I can't find a new filter of that type.
