My first thought on seeing the photo was exactly what others have posted, that it is the side mount tire support bar. Dredging up decades-old memory, my 1941 had a cast or steel bracket attached somehow down inside the well and the arm connected to that. Mine was a 120A which from the factory had 160 trim and had only a single passenger side mount but it should be identical to your 160. If I can locate any photos - if I even have any - of the assembly, I'll post them.
