Check the size of your existing wiring. Prior owner on my 1928 use #14 wire for my feed to the ammeter (which can draw up to 25 amps). The wiring got so hot that the internal insulation melted and leached out between the cloth wiring.

At a high level: #14 is good for 15 amps, #12 20 amps, and #10 30 amps.
