The door handles had nothing on the shaft and could be removed without even removing the upholstery panel. The screw holding them in was in the door jamb and screwed directly into the handle from the side.
On these 1940-1941 handles from my site's classified ads, the raised bump on the casting right where the shaft meets it is where the screw attaches.
