Colin, that your car has a decal for the vehicle number plate rather than a metal plate confirms without question that it's a 1938. The gray painted dashboard is a confirming feature.

I don't have a parts list handy to check and could certainly be incorrect but I was under the impression that the trunk lid emblem shown on the 1939 formal sedan was a 1939 feature.
