On my '55 (two 4 barrels) the acc. pump was worn out and very loose. It meant that very little gas was pumped when the car was given more throttle. A fast flooring of the car cause major hesitation. I removed the air cleaner and looked down both carbs and the issue was readily visible in the front carb. I replaced the pump in place (being extremely careful not to drop anything down the hole. Problem went away.

It is very easy to check to see if the pump isn't working
