As the crank rotates the squirt hole will line up with the connecting rod oil feed. For the eights the oil squirt is directed at the camshaft and the piston slot. This is critical for the earlier cars with stamped cam roller carriers.

On the V-12 then where the oil is directed is determined by where the crankshaft hole is located.

Blocking off the squirt hole is total bone head on motors with long connecting rods. I can image the conversation on that one: "We don't need no holes cuz I saw on the TV that small block bowties don't have no hole in them. Let's do what we seen on the TV."
