Regarding dropping the pan. I recommend learning as much as you can about the condition of the car, inside out. As I have posted elsewhere here, There are parade motors and driving motors (ask me how I know). I recommend driving the car to warm up the oils then change them, taking a sample mid drain. You can obtain sampling kits from a number of places, even Napa auto parts offer them. Also taking a compression check of each cylinder, to verify pressures are within 10% of each other. Lastly a infrared heat gun on the engine and radiator to see if you have any hot or cold spots. We love our cars and need to protect them from catastrophe and major expenses. Sorry for the rant.
