You can use anything rod shaped that is fairly long and straight. Needs to be just under 1/8" in diameter and able to withstand some gentle taps with a hammer if the pin is stuck.

A nail with the point ground off works as does a length of brazing rod. Important thing is to make sure the escutcheon is pushed hard against the spring and clear of the holes on both sides. If not clear, as the rod moves or particularly when the pin slides out it can put a mark or gouge that can be visible.
