Please check your timing carefully as as a few degrees late will cause these engines to make a LOT of heat.

In another thread an owner noticed how much power he picked up by changing his timing chain. Amen to that. I have observed several times that a new chain makes an engine far more peppy and create less heat as the valve timing comes back into spec. You can make a rough check of that by turning your engine backward then forward while observing your distributor rotor. A very few degrees of crankshaft rotation should make the rotor change direction.
